Sconza Candy to leave East Bay after 69 years, move to Oakdale

Written on March 22, 2008

The venerable Sconza Candy Co., a family-owned manufacturer of candy products that first began production in the East Bay in 1939, will be shutting the doors of its Oakland plant about Sept. 1.

Sconza is relocating its business to the Central Valley community Oakdale, east of Modesto. Janet Sconza-Angers, vice president of customer relations, said Friday the company has purchased a 300,000-square-foot plant formerly operated by The Hershey Co. of Hershey, Pa. Hershey ceased operations at its Oakdale plant in February, according to Sconza-Angers.

She did not disclose the purchase price. After the company moves the equipment from the main 70,000-square-foot Oakland plant that it has occupied since 1967, she said, production should begin in Oakdale around Oct payday loan. 1.

Sconza-Angers said her company's unionized Oakland employees, who number from 100 to 130 depending on the time of year, will be allowed to apply for about the same number of jobs in Oakdale.

Sconza "had long outgrown" the Oakland facilities, she said. Production and administrative functions were split up among three different locations around Oakland, but the new location will allow all company operations to be consolidated under one roof.
