Report finds PG&E smart meters accurate
Written on September 3, 2010
An independent report commissioned by the California Public Utilities Commission finds that PG&E smart meters are "accurately recording electric usage" and are being "accureately utilized in customer billing."
The report, by Structure Consulting Group, was commissioned in response to thousands of complaints from PG&E customers who blamed smart meters for higher bills.
The report echoed previous findings by PG&E that most high bills were associated with electricity and gas usage on the part of customer, plus planned rate hikes, some of which began in conjunction with a heat wave in 2009, and not with systemic problems with the smart meters or supporting infrastructure.
Structure Group did find that PG&E was not meeting best practices in the way it handled customer complaints. While PG&E has improved since the smart meter deployment began in 2006, it is still only "partially compliant."
