Wichita Area Technical College this week received verbal notification that the college will be recommended for initial accreditation to the Higher Learning Commission.
A six-person HLC team was in town this week and is expected to recommend accreditation through at least 2013. Five years is the maximum time period that schools can qualify for initial accreditation.
"We celebrate a significant milestone in our journey to become a world-class college serving the higher education and training needs of Sedgwick County and beyond," said Pete Gustaf, WATC president, in a written statement. "The college's board of trustees, faculty, staff and students are to be commended for their diligent efforts in preparing the institution for this successful visit for accreditation."
In the coming months, WATC representatives will go before an HLC panel for final review in Chicago. Upon final approval by the commission's board of trustees, WATC will be fully accredited by HLC for five years payday advance.
All public community colleges and universities in Kansas are accredited through HLC. WATC says accreditation will allow the college to participate as an equal partner in the state's higher education community and will increase the ability for students to transfer credit from one institution to another.
HLC is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and is one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States.
